Cupping, What Are Those Purple Dots?

girl with cupping, therapeutic cupping

Therapeutic cupping, is a traditional practice that involves creating a localized vacuum within cups and placing them on the skin's surface. The underlying mechanisms and benefits of cupping therapy are as follows:

  • Mechanical Effects: The suction from the cups creates negative pressure, which draws skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscles upward into the cup. This mechanical manipulation can stimulate various cellular and physiological responses.

  • Improved Blood Flow: Cupping can dilate blood vessels and increase blood circulation in the treated area. This enhanced blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to tissues, which can aid in tissue repair and reduce muscle tension.

  • Muscle Relaxation: The lifting and stretching of the skin and underlying tissues can help release muscle knots and fascial adhesions. It's particularly useful for myofascial pain syndromes.

  • Pain Reduction: Cupping is believed to stimulate the body's pain-relief mechanisms. It may trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Cupping can modulate the body's inflammatory response, reducing inflammation in the treated area, which is beneficial for various musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Connective Tissue Remodeling: Cupping may influence the extracellular matrix, promoting collagen production and aiding in tissue healing and remodeling.

  • Nervous System Regulation: Some individuals find cupping therapy relaxing and stress-reducing. It can also have a mild sedative effect on the autonomic nervous system.
